Is It Against the Law Not to Have Car Insurance in Illinois?

by Illinois Department of Insurance on March 8, 2012

My friend just got her liscense but she doesnt have car insurance. She drives her parents' car, n the car insurance is under their name, not hers. But i also know that they do not hvae enough money at the moment to add her name to their insurance. Is this wrong? if so, how wrong? What would happen to her if she ever got caught?

If she got in an accident it would probably cost her parents a lot of money.

Most car insurance carriers require you to specifically include, or exclude family members that would routinely have access to the car. That is how they base the risk they will be assumming in determining the cost of the[policy. If she is NOT included the carrier would probably deny any claims for accidents/damage she was involved in.

This is my choice as well. Of course it doesn’t hurt that it isn’t a bank. I use a local credit union in conjunction with Alliant for all my financial needs. Just because I have enough money to avoid the predatory behavior of the major banks doesn’t mean I’ll support them.
